--Where have you come from??--

When Daikan Enō of Mount Sōkei, first went to train on Mount Ōbai, the Zen Master asked him, “Where have you come from?”
Enō replied, “I am a native from south of the Peaks.” (That is from southeast China.)
The Master then asked, “What is it that you seek in coming here?”
Enō replied, “I am seeking to become a Buddha.”
The Master said, “People from south of the Peaks do not possess Buddha Nature, so how can you become a Buddha?!!!!!!!!!!!”
